The Contribution of Social Media in Crisis Management

COSMIC was a two year project that started in April 2013. The COSMIC project will identify the most effective ways to use new information and communication technologies (ICTs) in crisis situations for the protection of ordinary citizens. It will ensure better linkages between prevention, detection, reporting and rescue in crisis situations as well as assist officials and first responders in using new ICTs and applications to be more effective and efficient during crises. COSMIC had seven partners.

Within the project Trilateral led the task relating to understanding the types of new media applications available to crisis managers. Trilateral also led the work package on stakeholder engagement, and contributed to understanding the ethical, legal and social considerations in engaging the public on social media to aid crisis management activities. Elsewhere, Trilateral contributed to case studies examining social media in a crisis as well as background research to understand the types of crises affecting Europe. The COSMIC project culminated in a set of hints and tips for crisis managers and members of the public aiming to optimise the use of social media for crisis response.
