Leanne Cochrane is a Senior Research Analyst within the Policy, Ethics and Emerging Technologies (POET) team at Trilateral.
She brings to Trilateral over ten years of experience working in law and human rights research, investigations and teaching. This includes working for an NGO focused on rule of law and human rights capacity building in the Middle East and North Africa region, the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (an ‘A’ status national human rights institution ‘NHRI’) as well as academic roles with the Open University, Queen’s University Belfast and Roehampton University.
Leanne’s primary passions lie in the areas of social justice and human rights research ethics with a more theoretical interest in the matter of legal sovereignty. Leanne periodically volunteers to represent clients at social security tribunals and in the community organisation Storehouse Belfast.
Leanne is a Fellow with the UK Advance Higher Education, a qualified lawyer (New York, 2008) and an Associate Lecturer with the Faculty of Business and Law at the Open University.
Leanne has published/co-published several academic articles, human rights reports and policy consultations on human rights topics related to the United Kingdom.
Her academic articles appear in the Northwestern Journal of Human Rights, the Cambridge Law Journal, the International Journal of Human Rights and the Max Planck Encyclopaedia of Comparative Constitutional Law.
Leanne has worked on two Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded projects, as a research assistant on the ‘Public Interest in UK Courts’ (2009-2010) and as a post-doctoral level fellow on ‘Human Rights in Transition: the impact for the UK in a Changing Europe’ (2016).
Leanne’s doctoral thesis seeks to contribute to discussions on the unsettled climate of legal sovereignty in the UK by proposing a deeper normative reading of the concept from the ethical foundation of pluralism.
